Germany

Germany has a history of winemaking that dates back to 100 B.C. when ancient Romans, who conquered the region, began producing wines on local soil. It was the Romans, who already recognized the potential of sites like the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen and who cultivated grapes there. Researchers have found a wine press in Piesport that dates back to 400 A.D., making it the largest Roman wine press ever found north of the Alps.

While today many great wines are found around the globe, it is the unique terroir and traditional production methods, which allow Germany to produce exceptional quality wines that are still some of the finest in the world.

A remarkable characteristic of German viticulture is the care and attention to detail that goes into the production of its wines. German vintners are extremely adept at blending centuries-old experience with the latest in modern viticulture and are exacting in their methods: They harvest the grapes for their best wines by hand, use “green” or sustainable production techniques, age their whites in stainless steel tanks and the reds in traditional aged oak barrels.

What’s even more outstanding is the fact that wine of such quality is produced in one of the coldest and northernmost growing regions in the world. Because of the harsher climate, Germany’s vineyards are usually found on slopes facing southward to assure the longest exposure to the sun. They are also often found in river valleys, such as the Rhine and Mosel, because of the water’s ability to moderate night temperatures and reflect the warmth of the sun.

The naturally high acidity, outstanding fruit and transparent quality of German Riesling are its trademark around the world. Its long finish, complex flavors and crisp zest are the benchmarks that make German Riesling so unique and ideal for pairing with food.

Rheingau

QbA Rieslings are the first level of good quality German Wines.  They offer more finesse over our domestic counterparts and from a quality to value ratio are some of the best priced wines on the market.  All of our offerings are estate fruit, estate bottled, single varietal and are still small production ( 4 to 7K bottles).  Compared to 90% of German QbA's, including the "blue bottles,' our wines offer fantastic quality, especially in relation to their price.

  • Barth "Allore" (Semi Dry)

  • Hans Lang "Sabrina" (Semi Dry)

Mosel

Riesling from Germany is arguably the best in the world.  We have a direct relationship with the top producing vintners and hand select quality that is difficult to find in the US Riesling market.  These vineyards and their wines are known for their history and their traditional production methods.  Some estates are over 600 years old and follow strict governmental regulation on the quality standards(Qualitatswein mit Pradikat).  Simple, yet diverse and elegant, a Riesling Kabinett is a great compliment to a variety of cuisines and a perfect introduction to quality German viticulture.

  • Bless Ferber "Tritnheim" (Dry)

  • Thanisch "Feinher" (Semi Dry)

Mosel

Riesling Spatlese (late harvest) is quite possibly the most dynamic and flavorful white wine in the world.  The traditional late harvest Riesling can be dry to sweet and has great character, charm and integrity.  Again, we work with the top producing sites and hand select quality that is difficult to find in the US market.  These wines are outstanding with a variety of foods and are known for their elegance.

  • Bless Ferber "Piesporter Gartchen" (Semi Dry)

  • Thanish "Feiherb" (Semi Dry)

Rheingau

Outside of the amazing QmP varieties we carry, we have located vintner who embrace their terroir and produce outstading varietals known to Germany and some that are well known around the globe.  In particular the soil of Rheinhessen is very much like Burgundian soil and the dry summer heat produces some exceptional, earthy wines.  We are also extremely proud to carry the Barth and Hans Lang Charta Rieslings, arguably the best food pairing white wine in the world.

  • Barth (Dry)

  • Hans Lang (Dry)

Mosel

Riesling Auslese directly translates as select harvest.  At this stage, the grapes are begining to shrivel like raisins and will be affected typically 20% - 80% by botrytis. They are hand selected bunches of grapes and often are harvested with the sugar content of a BA.  They can be done ethereal sweet, yet can be found in dryer forms with higher alcohol levels.

  • Gutzler (Sweet)

  • Bless Ferber (Sweet)

Rheinthessen

Pinot Noir has undergone a revival in Germany over the last 30 years, as the climate and standards organizations (Barrique Forum, VDP, ect.) have produced some of the most affordable, yet unknown Pinot Noir on the market today. These wines stand tall against California and Burgundy and you may be pleasantly surprised by the quality.

  • Wasem "Spatburgunder" (Dry)
